Manama: A decision by local authorities in the Red Sea city of Jeddah to removed a love message painted on the pavement has sparked a social media debate.

The “Love you forever” declaration was so large it could be seen from high-rise buildings in the area.

Even though Jeddah is considered to the most liberal Saudi city, authorities decided to remove the message.

They said they were worried that keeping it would encourage others graffiti artists to paint other areas of the city.

Saudis rushed to social media to give their two cents on the issue.

Wonder posted: If he really loves a woman, he should tell her openly instead of painting a love message on the public pavement for everyone to see.

Al Shayeb wrote: If you truly love her, go to her instead of vandalising the pavement with your personal message.

Dodge said he supported the love-struck artist.

“You have every right to express your love. Only those who have really fallen in love appreciate the significance of what you did,” he wrote.

Mamdouh was also impressed.

“This is one of the most romantic acts I have ever seen,” he said.

Other users floated the idea that the municipality should set aside a dedicated pavement area for lovers to express their feelings for one month every year.
