A new design has been approved for Emirati passports and Emirates ID, it was announced on Sunday. The "new-generation design" boasts of additional security features.   

The current passports and Emirates IDs will be replaced in phases.

This came as His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, chaired a UAE Cabinet meeting on Sunday ahead of the UAE Commemoration Day and National Day.

Sheikh Mohammed took to Twitter to announce some key decisions adopted by the Cabinet:

> A cyber security council will be set up. The council will formulate policies and regulations to improve cyber security across all sectors.

> A public policy to protect the environment has been adopted. This will help boost the quality of air, agriculture production and waste management.

> A national media team has been approved. It will include influencers in the UAE's media sector. It will work on policies to improve the country's media.

> Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, has been appointed as the UAE's special representative to combat climate change. He will represent the UAE in all global events related to climate change.
