Dubai: Dubai Civil Defence has warned the public about fires spreading from ovens during Ramadan as many people rush to finish cooking before iftar time and forget to close them.

Major-General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, director-general of Dubai Civil Defence, said most of the fires in Ramadan happened because of using ovens and Mabkhara (incense burner) in the kitchen.

“Fires in Ramadan mostly happen in kitchens because many people want to cook the food before iftar and forget the oven working or they have failed in doing timely maintenance of electric cables and gas pipes. People must be careful and make sure the ovens are closed after cooking. Check the gas cylinders, which must not be stored near sources of heat or under the sun,” Maj-Gen Al Matroushi said.

According to official statistics, Dubai Civil Defence recorded 15 fires during Ramadan in 2016 as compared to 20 fires in the holy month in 2015. During Ramadan 2014, there were 27 fires. Most of the fires were minor ones.

“There has been a drop in the number of fires in Ramadan in the recent years because more people have become aware now and are taking precautionary measures in kitchens. We spread awareness (about fires) during Ramadan by posting advices and instructions on social media,” he added.

He said the firefighters stand ready 24 hours during Ramadan and they have a clear-cut plan to respond fast to any emergency situation.

Maj-Gen Al Matroushi reminded people that Ramadan tents need to get approval from the Civil Defence and the municipality before operating them. The tents must have enough space and must not be blocking traffic. They must meet all stipulated safety conditions.
