UAE - Thefts of building materials at under-construction sites are becoming rampant and brazen. To prevent such crimes, the Sharjah Police have teamed up with the Sharjah Municipality and launched a month-long awareness and inspection campaign.

A Sharjah Police official said that the move has been taken after investigations revealed that such crimes were growing due to the negligence of the under-construction building owners.

Brigadier-General Mohammad Rashid Bayat, director-general of police operations, said: "The campaign comes within the framework of the strategic plan of the Ministry of Interior, aimed at enhancing public security and safety, by raising community awareness of negative phenomena." Al Bayat pointed out the importance of such security awareness in contributing positively to reduce crimes.

He said that the police and the civic body has formed joint teams, which will carry out awareness campaigns and field inspections. The one-month campaign will target many sectors, including consultancy offices, contractors, workshops and shops selling scrap, owners of residential and other facilities.
