Ninety percent of Abu Dhabi residents feel that they are living in a safe and secure environment, according to a recent survey conducted by the Abu Dhabi government.

The Better Life Index study, whose results were announced on Tuesday, involved 51,000 participants, 60 percent of which expatriates. The study also showed that 68 percent of Abu Dhabi people are satisfied with their jobs.

The survey took four months and focused on 14 indicators including income, houses, health, jobs, security, social services, education and others. It was conducted in 2018 to set base the strategic plan for the implementation of initiatives for the newly established department dedicated to community development in Abu Dhabi.

The Abu Dhabi Department of Community Development was officially launched on Tuesday evening at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

The new local government department has been set to support the low income families, provide a decent life for all Emiratis and expatriates and uplift the social wellbeing of every member of the society.

Dr. Mugheer Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development said during the launch of the department: "This department embodies everything including the support, development and uplifting the lives of the needy and low income families."

"The establishment of the department of community development is to organize the community and help them in all aspects of life. We want to help citizens and expats in all aspects. We shall help them find jobs so that they become financially independent."

He added: "Through our strategic social community development plan, the department shall ensure the provision of suitable houses for all people, qualify life for expats and nationals, good health, happy families with happy children and a coherent community."

Al Khaili noted that they have also launched a new initiative called Maan - meaning together in Arabic-a comprehensive platform for volunteering and social innovations.

Maan, which falls under the realm of the Department of Community Development, will activate social cooperation and contribution in Abu Dhabi for all sectors of society, including nationals, expats and organisations. It will also support the efforts of government organisations to strengthen volunteer work in the emirate.

Dr. Al Khaili said told Khaleej Times: "Maan was created as a special organisation on the ground to promote everything relating to community management and participation. It has been formed on the concept of providing a decent life for every member of society."

"We want to use all members of society including the youth and old people to create a cohesive, robust and inclusive society for all individuals, departments and organisation to work together."

"Our aim is not just about extending support, we want ensure that we provide quality, efficiency and affordable services to the community."

He said they were also making awareness so that people know that the government is there to help them in all ways.
