BEIRUT: The Syndicate of Owners of Gas Canister Filling Stations warned Wednesday that Lebanon may witness a gas shortage as the winter season approaches.

The syndicate said in a statement that importing companies have been rationing gas because the Central Bank has not secured the necessary funds for imports.

The syndicate called on BDL Gov. Riad Salameh to find a solution to the problem and the economic crisis.

BDL in August had said that it could only continue subsidizing fuel oil, wheat, pharmaceutical products and the EDL for another three months only.

BDLs foreign currency reserves dwindled sharply over the past year due to sharp devaluation of the national currency against the dollar and its constant intervention in the market to keep the Lebanese pound stable.

Once BDL ends subsidies of these basic items, the prices of these items will be in line with the international market and this means that the consumers will notice a remarkable increase in the prices of fuel oil, bread and medications in the market.
