MANAMA: Bahrain and Cyprus yesterday heralded a new era in their bilateral relations.

His Majesty King Hamad and the visiting Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades held official talks at Gudaibiya Palace which focused on ‘the common desire of moving forward with the aim of benefits for both countries’.

A range of regional topics including Iranian nuclear issue and peace in the Middle East were also discussed.

An agreement was signed in their presence on visa exemptions for diplomatic, special and service passport holders.

Both countries also signed a memorandum of understanding on economic and technical co-operation.

Upon arrival, the official reception protocols were held for President Anastasiades and the Cypriot and Bahraini national anthems were played.

Then the two leaders held talks in which His Majesty underlined the importance of the Cypriot President’s visit in fostering partnership in light of the promising investment opportunities existing in both countries.

President Anastasiades expressed happiness about visiting the kingdom and thanked the King for the gracious welcome and hospitality.

He commended the King’s humanitarian initiatives to boost coexistence and tolerance between different cultures.

The King held a lunch banquet in honour of the visiting President and his accompanying delegation.

President Anastasiades left Bahrain last night.

The Cypriot delegation which arrived on Sunday is accompanied by members of the Cabinet, including Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides, Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister Natasa Pilides, Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Minister Costas Kadis, Tourism Deputy Minister Savvas Perdios and government spokesman Marios Pelekanos.

They will be in Bahrain until Friday.
