MANAMA: The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has welcomed the government’s decision of giving a three-month extended reprieve to businesses hardest hit by the coronavirus downturn.

The government stepped in to shoulder 50 per cent of the salaries of insured Bahrainis working in these private sector businesses.

The measure, which covers July, August and September, was announced during the weekly Cabinet session, chaired remotely by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, attended the virtual session.

The government has already shouldered the full salaries of Bahrainis working in the private sector for April, May and June.

BCCI chairman Sameer Nass said the decision by the national leadership will go a long way in supporting the people of Bahrain and the business community and help them overcome the impact of the coronavirus pandemic while also ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the people and the national economy.

The chairman reiterated the chamber’s support for all measures taken by the government to eradicate hurdles caused by the pandemic, and vowed exerting all efforts in collaboration with the public sector to reinvigorate the national economy and overcome this hardship.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the Bahrain Chamber revealed that it received 81 grievances in the first quarter of 2020, of which 86 per cent were resolved.

It explained that the grievances were processed by a dedicated team via its members complaints unit, which also worked closely with relevant authorities and ministries.

In this regard, the chamber reinstated its support to all members of the business community and its readiness to resolve any issue curbing their progress.

The members complaints unit was launched in 2018 in implementation of the chamber’s strategy that seeks to enhance liaison between the BCCI and its members.

In a related development, the Bahrain Chamber announced yesterday it has launched a directory of commercial and industrial laws through its website and smartphone application.

The BCCI has also launched a guide to Bahrain’s commercial and industrial laws.

The chamber is tabulating and disseminating laws, regulations, customs, information, and statistics related to commercial and industrial activities, making it easier for all members of to refer to them.
