A move that would have stripped the government of flexibility when submitting the two-year national budget to legislators has been rejected.

Shura Council members yesterday rejected, for the second time, amendments to the 2002 Budget Law that would have obliged the Finance and National Economy Minister to present the national budget in August to the Cabinet to ensure it gets referred in time before the October deadline. It has now been referred to a joint National Assembly session for a vote.

Such a joint session has not been held since 2002.

Shura financial and economic affairs committee chairman Khalid Al Maskati said the government needed flexibility and didn’t need to be rushed into submitting any budget.
