The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) is planning to install central air conditioning systems in new areas across the city to save energy and promote the culture of conservation.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr Rashid Al Leem, chairman of SEWA, said central air cooling system in various new areas will contribute towards curbing energy consumption by 30 to 40 per cent. SEWA has already started carrying out studies - in cooperation with local and international companies - to introduce the energy-efficient systems in buildings and facilities in the new areas, while training special cadres of citizens to implement the plan. The studies will focus on best incentives for development of power systems in the new areas, accuracy of design, ensuring optimal performance in reducing costs, operational processes and use of treated water as an alternative to potable water in improving the efficiency of the cooling systems in the buildings.

Al Leem explained that SEWA's move will go a long way in achieving the leadership's vision and aspirations of environmental sustainability and transformation of the city to become a global model in energy rationalisation.

Dr Al Leem said the demand for power has increased in areas where the central AC systems are being planned and it will help in checking carbon emissions.

SEWA will also launch awareness campaigns to rationalise energy consumption and boost conservation. The programmes will also sensitise the building owners about the effectiveness of central AC systems.
