An Indian card payments system will be launched in Bahrain as part of an agreement that will be signed during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

RuPay, which is run by the National Payments Corporation of India, competes with other global card payments systems such as Visa and Mastercard.

India will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bahrain and the UAE to roll out the RuPay card as part of Mr Modi’s visit to the two Gulf states this week.

This is the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Bahrain, as Mr Modi is expected to arrive on Saturday.

Details of the two-day visit were released at a Press conference in Delhi yesterday by External Affairs Ministry economic relations secretary T S Tirumurti.

Other key agreements will also be signed including those focusing on cultural, space and renewable energy.

“An MoU will be signed to launch the RuPay card in Bahrain and the UAE during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit,” said Mr Tirumurti.

Once launched, it will enable Indian travellers holding RuPay cards to use them in Bahrain for their transactions.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa to discuss the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and also regional and international issues.

His Majesty King Hamad will host a dinner banquet in honour of the Indian leader who will also launch the renovation of Shreenathji (Shree Krishna) Temple in Manama.

Before arriving in Bahrain, Mr Modi will make a state visit to the UAE where he will be honoured with the highest UAE civilian decoration, the Order of Zayed.

Mr Modi is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron on August 22 to August 23. He will also represent India in the G7 meeting on August 26 in Biarritz, France.
