Honeywell, a global technology leader, and Etisalat Misr, a subsidiary of the UAE's Emirates Telecommunications Group, have teamed up to provide city management services in Egypt’s new administrative capital.

The two firms signed an agreement on Sunday at Intersec 2020, a three-day trade fair for safety, security and fire protection held in Dubai.

Honeywell will deploy advanced Internet of Things (IoT) software and hardware solutions for the new City Operations Center (COC) as part of the project’s first phase.

“Cities today are facing many operational challenges stemming from rising urbanisation and population growth. At Honeywell, we provide the solutions by focusing on helping cities to become greener, safer and more productive,” George Bou Mitri, vice president and general manager for Middle-East, Turkey and Africa at Honeywell’s Building Technologies told Zawya.

The central COC platform will enable data analytics, a city-wide management dashboard, a smart city services citizen engagement portal and mobile application capabilities.

Honeywell technology will also power advanced management systems for smart parking and smart utility services for electricity, water and gas.

Egypt’s new capital, located just 45 kilometres east of Cairo, is one of the world’s largest smart city projects. It is being built in three phases and it will expand to cover more than 700 square kilometres once complete.

“Two main things are driving transition to smart cities in the region: the vision of each country and urbanisation,” Bou Mitri said, noting that he sees interest across the board for smart cities in the Middle East.

In February 2019, Honeywell announced an agreement with the Administrative Capital for Urban Development (ACUD) to deliver city-wide security and surveillance systems.

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) announced in November last year a 10-year partnership with Honeywell to use the latter’s monitoring and predictive analytics platform, to drive improved asset and machinery management across ADNOC's upstream and downstream operations.

“The UAE is one of the safest countries in the world and is a leader in using technology to enhance security and digital transformation,” Bou Mitri told Zawya.
