Etihad Airways will be flying to at least 58 destinations worldwide by August this year as travel restrictions around the world are starting to ease.

The long-haul operator announced on Tuesday that before the end of the summer, it will be able to build its network back on destinations where the coronavirus lockdowns have been lifted and resume 45 percent of its pre-coronavirus capacity.

“Throughout July and August, subject to the lifting of international restrictions and the reopening of individual markets, the airline plans to fly to 58 destinations worldwide from its Abu Dhabi hub,” the carrier announced.

The routes that will resume will include major gateways in the Middle East, North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, particularly Riyadh, Bahrain, Mumbai, Manila, Delhi, Hyderabad, Lahore, Chicago, New York JFK. Washington DC, Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Pari and Zurich, among many others.

Etihad grounded most of its fleet in March when the government decided to impose one of the strictest lockdowns in the world, in a bid to control the spread of coronavirus. The airline operated a limited number of flights during the lockdown, but mainly to repatriate stranded visitors in the UAE.

It has recently started resuming some of its passenger services, following the lifting of restrictions in the UAE.

“The easing of restrictions on travel to and from the UAE is an important first step and a great development for Abu Dhabi. By August, we aim to operate approximately 45 percent of our pre-COVID capacity,” said Tony Douglas, group chief executive officer of Etihad Aviation Group.

“The priority is now to build the network back up on markets that have opened up, and to provide a secure and hygienic flying environment across the entire guest journey,” he added.
