Latest developments in refining to be discussed at Global Refining Conference in Doha
Qatar Petroleum has signed a joint venture agreement with a consortium led by France's Total SA (TOT) to build a $1.5billion refinery in Ras Laffan Industrial City. The alliance will comprise Qatar Petroleum an Total owning 84% and 10% respectively. The remaining share will be owned by Japan's Idemitsu Kosan, Cosmo Oil, Marubeni Corp. and Mitsui. Qatar's Energy Minister Mohammed Al - Sada stated that the new refinery will give Ras Laffan a total installed condensate refining capacity of about 300,000 barrels per day, making it one of the largest single site facilities of its kind in the world.
This joint venture coupled with Pearl GTL's introduction of its jet fuel in airports will open new markets for Qatar. The Qatar Government has undertaken various initiatives to develop its natural gas reserves and increase exports of LNG. With an effort to bring all the refining experts together to deliberate on the future prospects of the industry, Fleming Gulf is organizing its 3rd edition of the Global Refining Technology Forum from the 16th to 18th September in Doha, Qatar. The forum will cover a wide range of topics like refining industry aligned with midstream gas processing industry and associated impacts, evolving gas-to-liquid technology, hydrogen management technology and ensuring process safety in refineries by implementing latest technologies.
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is currently moving towards commercializing its technology which will be used to produce biodiesel using non-edible vegetable oil. The biodiesel produced by this technology will ensure better oxidation stability than what is usually achieved by transesterification. The highlight of day one will be a presentation on third generation fuels focusing on areas like developing bio refinery to maximise product options and profit maximization and third-generation bio fuel as a viable solution for renewable and cheap energy sources. Refineries are diversifying their role now as they have to keep in mind the production of biofuels and the increase of heavy oil contents in conventional light oil reserves. The topic will update companies about the latest advancements in the industry and help them in their current operations.
Speakers at the conference will be representing leading companies like Qatar Shell GTL Limited, Saudi Aramco, Borouge, Kuwait National Petroleum Company, Sulzer Chemtech and Du Pont. The conference will hold interactive panel discussions on contractors/vendors management- strategies employed by modern refiners, tools used by decision makers to manage and control project cost, how effective additives are in refinery FCC operations and refining industry's partnership with knowledge centres. The final day of the conference will hold two workshops on comprehensive sulphur management for tomorrow's environment and industrial water treatment.
The conference will be held at Renaissance Doha City Centre Hotel. Located in the center of the city, Renaissance Doha City Center Hotel one of the tallest building in Middle East. The hotel is close to City Centre Doha, Corniche, and Qatar SC Stadium. With petroleum companies under constant pressure to meet production standards, maximize profits and maintain high safety protocols, the conference will aim to address such challenges in the ever changing world economy.
