Demonstrates Use of Life-Saving Equipment through One-Act Play

Dubai-UAE: 24 January, 2012 - MAQUET Middle East, a market innovator for operating room systems and intensive care units based in Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park (DuBiotech), the life sciences hub in the Middle East and a member of TECOM Investments, launched the MAQUET Middle East Academy during the 37th Arab Health 2012.

Arab Health 2012 runs from 23-26 January at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The largest healthcare exhibition and congress in the Middle East provides an unrivalled platform for the world's leading manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors to meet the medical and scientific community from the Middle East and beyond.

The newly launched MAQUET Middle East Academy is set to offer a number of courses on subjects relevant to the industries that MAQUET serves such as respiratory and cardiovascular care as well as surgical and medical equipment. Located at the Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park, the 2,000 sq. feet facility features one large multimedia-enabled conference and showroom.

As part of its launch activities at Arab Health 2012, the MAQUET Academy held workshops that offered industry-related insights to an audience of potential students from the sciences and medical discipline as well as seasoned healthcare practitioner. To complement this offering, an educational suite has been set up as collaboration between ArjoHuntleigh, Getinge, MAQUET as well as other industry partners that offer training and scientific lectures on solutions to improve patient outcome.

Leveraging its participation at Arab Health 2012, MAQUET Middle East also hosted a theatrical and educational demonstration of its medical equipment and therapies for visitors to the booth and its dedicated educational suite. A first-of-its-kind medical play in the Middle East, MAQUET erected a special setting for this purpose. Designed as a fully-equipped operating clinic, the set-up portrayed an emergency scenario where an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patient is transferred to the makeshift MAQUET clinic.

Dr Tilman Schwab, Corporate Clinical Director, Advanced Therapies, used the format of an interview to moderate the medical play. Each consulting room at the makeshift clinic had specialists to answer questions from the audience on the product or clinical procedures that was demonstrated.

Salah Malek, Managing Director, MAQUET Middle East, said: "The launch of the MAQUET Middle East Academy is aligned with our commitment to offer unmatched medical education in the Middle East. Physicians, nurses, technicians, and engineers from hospitals across the region are invited to visit and experience MAQUET Middle East Academy's offering.

"The one-act play allowed us to introduce our range of equipment, medical devices and solutions that save an AMI patient's life from the time of transportation and treatment in an emergency room until the shift to the recovery ward. We are confident that this attempt will assist medical and non-medical visitors at Arab Health 2012 to understand the importance of the equipment."

Marwan Abdul Aziz, Business Development Director at DuBiotech, said: "The launch of the MAQUET Middle East Academy supports DuBiotech's vision for 2012 to offer educational opportunities in various medical fields. Such programmes will assist us in accelerating the biotechnology industry and facilitating the development of potential talent in the UAE. We are also proud to support MAQUET Middle East in their creative outreach at Arab Health 2012. The theatrical format helped highlighting the role of those working behind the scene and the life-saving solutions they provide to hospitals."
