Sharjah: Accomplished Kuwaiti artist Abdul Rahman Al-Aqel took a packed house of children and youth on an exciting narrative journey of his life as an actor, which started out at the Arabian Gulf Theater in 1970, at the Sharjah International Film Festival for Youth and Children (SIFF) 2019, which is on until Friday, October 18, at the Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre (JRCC) in Sharjah.
He emphasised that his success in both television and theatre was not a product of just mixing with artists and professionals, but began taking shape right from the time when he was actively participating in school activities and summer clubs.
The actor said he was stunned by Sharjah’s exceptional cultural prosperity, and applauding the efforts of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who has successfully placed the emirate on the world map, especially culturally.
About the transition in theatre and television starting in the 1980s to now, he commented: “Things were less complicated in the past, given the simplicity of the times, when the focus of theatre was mostly on one topic. On the stage today, the narrative must address multiple human and social issues at the same time. The advent of modern technology has also reduced a production’s turnaround time significantly.”
He pointed out that theatre had the advantage of direct engagement and interaction with the audience, describing it as ‘the origin’ or ‘father of all performing arts’. He stressed the importance of theatre as a driver of change and told his young audience how he was able to make a positive change in Kuwait’s healthcare law with a theatrical performance that shed light on an issue related to it.
The panel discussion saw a turnout of children and young people, who enjoyed Al Aqel’s sense of humour and discussions of his comedy performances. He spoke about his voiceover performance for the character of ‘Absi’ in the animation series ‘Adnan wa Lina’ from the 90s.
Abdulrahman Al Aqel is an actor, author and filmmaker from Kuwait who made his way to stardom in the 1980s and 1990s. he is one of the leading children’s theatre performers in Kuwait and one of the most celebrated comedy superstars in the Gulf region. He also took part in dozens of comedy and drama performances for both theatre and TV.
