Conference and exhibition to be inaugurated by H.E. Eng. Essam Bin Abdulla Khalaf, Minister of Works, Kingdom of Bahrain

Manama, Bahrain, January 17, 2011: His Excellency Eng. Essam Bin Abdulla Khalaf, Minister of Works, Kingdom of Bahrain inaugurated the Infrastructure Middle East Conferences and Exhibition 2011 at a high profile ceremony attended by senior government officials, dignitaries, investors, sponsors and exhibitors. The three-day conference, conducted by the Ministry of Works, Bahrain Society of Engineers and Euro Institute for Information and Technology Transfer, is being held under the patronage of H.E. Eng. Essam Bin Abdulla Khalaf from Monday January 17 to Wednesday January 19 at Gulf Hotel Bahrain's Gulf International Convention Centre.

Speaking at the inaugural function Mr. Khalifa Al Mansoor, Conference Chairman and Assistant Undersecretary - Sanitary Affairs, Ministry of Works, said, "This is the second conference we are organising on the crucial subject of infrastructure development in the Middle East. The earlier conference 'Underground Infrastructure Middle East 2010' had focussed on transportation infrastructure and the supply and discharge systems that form the backbone of the functionality of cities. The 2011 event seeks to build on its success and learnings, widening its scope to include three segments, namely 'Underground infrastructure', 'Water and waste water' and 'Traffic and transportation' that will be taken up for discussion concurrently under the umbrella of 'Underground Infrastructure Middle East 2011'. As in the previous edition, the deliberations will be centred around planning, construction, operation and maintenance of the utilities that ensure that our people enjoy a comfortable and convenient lifestyle with a high standard of living."

The Ministry has always played a pivotal role in establishing sustainable service supply and delivery systems that can provide higher quality services to our citizens," he added.

The conference provides a key platform for government representatives, private sector developers, investors and financiers as well as leading industry experts to meet, discuss and find solutions to the problems confronting infrastructure development in the region. Stakeholders will get the opportunity to present their existing and future infrastructure projects, share information about their practical experiences in implementation, management and operation as well as undertake advocacy activities in order to prioritise their development, overcome procedural bottlenecks and ensure smooth progress in implementation and operation. 

The 2011 edition's  plenary session takes off with a discussion on "Visionary Technical Innovations" and "Key Regional Infrastructure Projects", which includes the planned development of the 1,940 km Gulf Railway Project linking the six GCC states. But it isn't only the large projects that will be the focus of attention. Various small and medium scale infrastructure projects that are currently under way and that require international inputs are also on the agenda for discussion.

The three-day conference features eight keynote addresses on day one following the opening ceremony. The following two days will see 45 speakers presenting technical papers in three sessions that will run in parallel. In addition more than 30 Companies from the Gulf region and Europe will participate in the exhibition organized in parallel to the conference, while the Conference Committee has scheduled two field trips at 3.00pm on day three.

The deliberations will cover all relevant technical and managerial aspects of infrastructure development, including sewerage, gas, water, power, district heating/cooling and telecommunication systems; water resources treatment and management; waste water and sludge treatment; re-use of treated waste water; and transportation, which covers roads and railways as well as activities and futuristic technologies such as tunneling.

As of now, the key sponsors of Infrastructure Middle East 2011 include Herrenknecht AG, mts PERFORATOR, beton & rohrbau C.-F. Infrastructure Middle East Conferences and Exhibition 2011 will remain open from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm on all the conference days. Admission is free for engineers, specialists and interested persons.
