Jeddah: The President of the Islamic Development Bank Group (IDB), Dr.Ahmad Mohamed Ali, has announced the decision of the Selection Committee regarding the winners of the IDB Prizes for Science & Technology for the 11th edition (1434H/2013G); these are:

Category-I (most outstanding contribution to social and economic development):

NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH(CNRS), LEBANON.

Category-II (most outstanding contribution to a given scientific field):

SOLAR ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE (SERI), MALAYSIA.

Category-III: (most noted scientific institution from a least developed member country):

AVICENNA TAJIK STATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY(TSMU), TAJIKISTAN.

These prizes were established in 1422H (2002G) to promote S&T excellence and capacity building in IDB member countries. Every year, three institutions are selected by an independent panel of eminent scientists from the Muslim World to receive the prize in the three categories. Each Prize consists of a cash award of US$ 100,000 and a trophy. The prizes will be awarded to the winners by the Chairman of the IDB Board of Governors in a special ceremony to be held on the occasion of the 38th  IDB Board of Governors Meeting in Dushanbe, Tajikistan during 21-22 May 2013G.

Over the past ten years these prizes, have been awarded to thirty institutions in IDB member countries including: Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Sudan and Turkey. Details about the winners of IDB Prizes for this year as the following :

NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH (CNRS), LEBANON

Among the 23 applications reviewed for Category -1 of the prize for Science & Technology which rewards institutions having made outstanding scientific and technological contribution to the development of a member country, National Council for Scientific Research, Lebanon, received the highest score based on their outstanding work.

CNRS has published substantial research articles and books. The CNRS, through its research laboratories and research grants given to scientists or research institutions, produced benefits which can flow into the economy and society. It generated useful knowledge, provided the society with skilled graduates and researchers, developed scientific networks, enhanced problem-solving capacities, and facilitated the creation of new enterprises.

SOLAR ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE (SERI), MALAYSIA

Among the 55 applications reviewed for Category -2 of the prize for Science & Technology which rewards institutions having achieved outstanding contribution to a given scientific field, the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), Malaysia received the highest score.

SERI has designed several advanced technological innovations in the use and application of solar energy. Its achievements became noticeable in spite of its seven years of existence and limited manpower. It has published 8 books as well as 235 journal articles with high scientific impact factor.

AVICENNA TAJIK STATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY(TSMU), TAJIKISTAN

Among the 17 applications reviewed for Category-3 of the prize for Science & Technology which rewards noted scientific research institutions in IDB Least Developed Member Countries (LDMCs) the Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (TSMU), Tajikistan received the highest score.

TSMU is the largest scientific, educational and medical complex in the country, providing high level training. In the last 5 years, TSMU has made 145 inventions, innovations and discoveries and published large number of books and scientific articles. It has strong collaboration with professional institutions locally, regionally and internationally.
