Brazilian exports to the Arab world witnessed a staggering growth, climbing to USD 17.743 billion in 2022 compared to the figures in 2021, according to the recent reports released by the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC). The imports have also reached USD 15.037 billion in 2022, as opposed to those recorded in 2021.

Brazilian exports to Saudi Arabia witnessed a growth of 41.26 per cent from USD 2.070 billion in 2021, to USD 2.925 billion in 2022. Similarly, exports to the UAE increased by 40.09 per cent, from USD 2.327 billion in 2021, to USD 3.260 billion in the following year. Additionally, the Brazilian exports to Egypt also saw an increase of 41.20 per cent to USD 2.843 billion in 2022, compared to USD 2.014 billion in 2021. Qatar witnessed a similar growth of 45.33 per cent from USD 284.26 million in 2021 to USD 413.132 million in 2022, while Kuwait saw a surge of 56.91 per cent, amounting to USD 303.886 million in 2022, compared to USD 193.66 million in 2021.

The ABCC report stated that products like cane or beet sugar, and chemically pure sucrose in solid form were the top products exported to the Arab world, totalling to USD 3.443 billion in 2022. Meat and edible offal of the poultry both fresh and frozen followed closely behind cane in the list of top exported commodities, which amounted to USD 3.164 billion. This was further followed by iron ores and concentrates including roasted iron pyrites (USD 2.914 billion), maize or corn (USD 2.013 billion), soyabeans (USD 1.107 billion), and frozen meat of bovine animals (USD 805.640 million).

Meanwhile, the Brazilian imports from the Arab countries have also seen a substantial surge in the previous year. The imports from the UAE totalled at USD 2.518 billion in 2022, rising at a rate of 157.57 per cent from USD 977.82 million in 2021. Likewise, the imports from Saudi Arabia increased by 83.89 per cent from USD 2.880 billion in 2021, to USD 5.297 billion in the previous year. Egypt saw a similar surge of 18.11 per cent from USD 541.97 million in 2021, to USD 640.11 million in 2022, while Qatar witnessed a growth of 53.11 per cent, increasing from USD 789.27 million in 2021 to USD 1.208 billion in 2022. Additionally, Kuwait experienced a similar rise of 555.54 per cent from USD 50.55 million in 2021, climbing to USD 331.38 million in 2022.

According to the reports, the top imported products from the Arab region were crude oil from petroleum and bituminous minerals (USD 3.786 billion), petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (USD 3.713 billion), nitrogenous mineral and chemical fertilisers (USD 2.586 billion), mineral or chemical fertilisers containing two or three of the fertilising elements - nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (USD 2.130 billion), and phosphatic mineral or chemical fertilisers, phosphatic (USD 814.70 million).

Osmar Chohfi, President of the ABCC said: “The positive figures in the export and import reflects the robust as well as the growing trade relations between Brazil and Arab nations. Despite numerous unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic, Brazil and the Arab nations were able to swiftly gain momentum in increasing their exports and bolster their trade. Over the upcoming months, we foresee a persistently high regional demand for Brazilian food products. Brazilian exports witnessed a substantial growth previous year, demonstrating their resiliency and capacity to flourish even amid difficult global market conditions.”

He added: “As always, the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce will strive to facilitate trade activities and identify new prospects in the economic relation between Brazil and the Arab world. The export and import activities between the countries have experienced continuous expansion, and we anticipate this trend to continue in the coming years as well. As Brazil's influence grows in the region and on other international markets, we anticipate strengthened ties and more positive outcomes in trade in the upcoming years.”
