Visit aims at sharing expertise, activating student exchange programs
ALHOSN University, a leading Abu Dhabi-based university dedicated to high-quality value-based education, recently received delegates from Kettering University, USA who shared their expertise with faculty and students. They also discussed the implementation of student exchange programs between the two universities.
Prof. Robert Simpson, Provost and VP for Academic Affairs, and Prof. Basem Alzahabi, Professor and Associate Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, who represented the Kettering University delegation, met with ALHOSN University's leadership and discussed how the university could operationalize a memorandum of understanding signed last year.
Prof. Alzahabi delivered a lecture entitled 'The Importance of Simulation for Engineers' during the 'New Generation of Building Design Softwares Seminar' hosted by ALHOSN's Center for Research and Consultancy on the second day of the visit. Kettering delegates also met with the heads of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences and discussed the hosting of ALHOSN students starting fall 2011. A plan has been drafted to transfer ALHOSN students to Kettering University for their 3rd and 4th years.
"Kettering's engineering courses rank among the best in the US, so there is so much that we can learn from them in this field and in their other world-class programs. Our partnership with Kettering University also enables us to expose our students to the university's unique learning environments through our exchange programs, in line with our promise of providing 'global knowledge with local vision.' We deeply appreciate Kettering's help in tapping the full potential of both our students and our faculty," said Dr Hamdi Sheibani, Provost, ALHOSN University, ALHOSN University.
"At Kettering we have a long history in cooperating with overseas institutions to share knowledge and offer students a cross-cultural experience. We look forward to continuing and expanding our cooperation with ALHOSN University, whether through specific projects or student exchange programs and faculty visits," said Prof. Robert Simpson, Provost and VP for Academic Affairs, Kettering University.
During their stay, the Kettering delegates visited a civil engineering class where Prof. Alzahabi delivered a lecture. To give them a taste of the structural and architectural design of tall buildings in Abu Dhabi, the delegates were treated to a tour of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and the adjacent Capital Gate, the world's farthest-leaning tower.
The delegation finalized plans and Memoranda of Understanding with ALHOSN's Prof. Abdul Rahim Sabouni, Vice Chancellor and CEO, and Dr. Hamdi Sheibani, Provost and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Last December 2010, ALHOSN University and Kettering University signed an International Articulation Agreement in which the two parties pledged to encourage and promote educational, professional and intercultural activities among their faculty, students, and staff. The agreement remains in force through 2013.
