LONDON (Dow Jones)--France's Total SA (TOT) is close to securing oil expiration licenses in the Kurdish region of Iraq, a move which would make it only the second major oil company to enter the area, The Sunday Times reports.

The deal could be announced within weeks, but is also not finalized and could still fall through the paper says, citing people close to the situation.

Chevron Corp (CVX) and ConocoPhillips (COP) are also looking at opportunities in the area, the paper reports.
