MUSCAT -- The Sultanate is pursuing a proactive strategy to develop economic co-operation with Yemen, Eng Ahmed bin Hassan al Dheeb, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said. The government encourages the Omani private sector companies to study the Yemeni market and export goods while some Yemeni products, especially agricultural goods, may find their way to the Omani markets, Al Dheeb said. The Sultanate has studied the possibility of maximising the economic benefits at border zones, resulting in the establishment of a free zone at Al Mazyona.
A proposal on co-operation to promote Al Mazyona zone has been raised to Yemeni officials, he said, adding that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry was presently studying the issue to find a suitable framework for co-operation through Al Mazyona free zone, either by creating a joint zone or joint venture. The study will come out with the best possible recommendations to establish such partnership and serve the interests of both countries, Al Dheeb noted. The Salalah free zone is independently managed by Salalah Free Zone LLC. A number of companies are implementing various projects in the area, Al Dheeb said.
The first phase of infrastructure development is almost over at Salalah free zone, he said, adding that the proximity of the zone to Salalah Port had given it a competitive edge. The government has injected RO 4.5 million in Salalah free zone, he said. With regard to a special economic zone in Sohar, a feasibility study is under way which will be referred to respective departments for study and action, Al Dheeb said.Plans are afoot to set up an economic zone and industrial area in the Wilayat of Duqm, he added. Mineral projects may be set up in the region as the area is rich in commercial minerals like limestone. Fisheries industries can also be set up in the area, he added.
The industrial estates managed by PEIE have witnessed constant growth at Rusayl, Sohar, Nizwa and Salalah, Al Dheeb said. Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM) has attracted a number of international companies and plans are under way to add a new building after completing the third building, which has been fully reserved by companies, he added. The fourth and fifth phase development in Sohar Industrial Zone and development of Rusayl and Al Buraimi industrial estates will start during the coming period. Tenders for these projects are under evaluation, he added.
