Sharjah is building the UAE's newest container terminal at Hamriyah Port, scheduled to become operational by September, Hamriyah Free Zone's director-general said yesterday.
The terminal will be a valuable addition to the services provided to the Zone's investors, Dr Rashid Al Leem, Hamriyah Free Zone's director-general, told Gulf News on the sidelines of a news conference.
It will be Sharjah's third container terminal after Port Khalid and Khor Fakkan.
Sharjah also operates an inland container terminal. The new terminal is being built by the Sharjah Ports Authority (SPA), he said.
Information about the capacity, port equipment and investment was not available yesterday.
Details such as who would manage the terminal, its capacity and equipment had not been finalised, SPA officials said.
The Hamriyah port has a depth of 14 metres and handles non-containerised breakbulk cargo, liquid petroleum gas and petrochemical vessels.
The port was inaugurated in 1976.
