Saudi Jazan Province has commenced the implementation of a grain silos and flour mills project in collaboration with the Grain Silos and Flour Mills Organization, at a total cost of USD 100 million (SAR 374 million), an official source told Zawya.

The source said on condition of anonymity that the project will include concrete silos for wheat storage, a conveyors system and truck delivery points; two units for unloading ships with a capacity of 1000 tons per hour; flour and bran storage warehouses; maintenance workshops and spare parts stores. The project will also include premises for administration and sales; an electric transformers station; a distribution plant; safety auxiliary works; a firefighting system as well as water and wastewater lines.

The project includes a flour mill at Jazan port of capacity 600 tons per day, at a total cost of SAR 186.5 million, which includes a six-storey facility that houses comprehensive mills complete with flour-production lines.

According to the Grain Silos and Flour Mills Organization, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has reduced buying of locally produced wheat since 2008 at a rate of 12.5% annually over an 8 year period till it fully abandons its wheat-cultivation program by 2016.The Kingdom in 2011 imported 2 million tons of wheat and strives to import close to 3 million tons of wheat per year by 2016.
