RIYADH -- With 2.5 million pilgrims expected during the Haj season and 7.5 million visitors for Umrah, which includes two million pilgrims during Ramadan alone, the Kingdom's air-conditioning industry has received a big boost.
Carrier Corp., a business unit of United Technologies Corp., has announced that it has landed a multimillion-dollar contract for the supply of Aquaforce chillers to Safwa Hotel in Makkah.
The hotel, which comprises two towers, requires a chilling system that combines operational efficiency with energy saving. Carrier said it would supply 16 30XA chillers, 60AHUs and 1200FCUs by the second quarter of this year for the first phase of the project. The second phase is expected to be implemented in 2008.
"The rapid pace of infrastructural development in the Kingdom has triggered a huge demand for cooling systems across various segments," said Baqir Ali Johar, general manager of Carrier Saudi Arabia.
"Carrier's manufacturing bases enable it to cater to the huge demand generated by the government sector. It also equips the company to capitalize on new opportunities in the private sector," he added.
Johar said an important aspect of their technology is that its Aquaforce chillers use a micro-channel technology that significantly reduces power costs. The chiller also relies on a non-ozone depleting refrigerant making it a preferred system in the context of growing concerns over environmental protection.
Carrier Saudi Arabia, a joint venture between E.A. Juffali and Brothers and Carrier Corporation, includes the Arabian Airconditioning Company Ltd., and Carrier Saudi Service Company Ltd., with offices in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Makkah and Madinah.
In addition, Carrier has been manufacturing locally via its Saudi Arabian Manufacturing Company (SAMCO) in Jeddah since 1987. This ensures that Carrier products are customized for the high ambient Saudi conditions to serve local needs.
Carrier in the Middle East has recently expanded its portfolio with the launch of G3, Xpression brand air-conditioners and Aquaforce brand chillers. These high-performance products enhance indoor air quality and provide energy savings and environmental benefits.
