SALALAH -- The Public Authority for Electricity and Water will on Sunday mark the opening of a RO 385 million electricity and desalination plant in the Wilayat of Mirbat, Dhofar Governorate. K Shanmogam, Singapore Foreign Minister and Minister of Law, will attend the ceremony, along with government officials and representatives of Sembcorp Salalah Power and Water project, the project's implementing company.

The project was completed and the station began operations in May 2012. With a production capacity of 490 MW of electric power, the plant produces 75 per cent of the total energy demand in the governorate. The power and water will be provided in the station for 15 years by the government-owned Oman Power and Water Procurement firm. Sembcorp Salalah Power and Water Company was established to carry out the project a joint venture between Sembcorp of Singapore and Oman Investment Corporation.

Oman Power and Water Procurement Company will purchase the generated power and desalinated water for 15 years from the date of commercial operation of the project. Dhofar Power Company will establish and enhance the electricity transport and distribution network. This facility will be the largest and most efficient power and water plant in Dhofar and will play a major role in meeting the governorate's power and water needs.
