Muscat - The proposed bus manufacturing and assembly unit in Oman, which has been planned by Qatari national transport company Mowasalat and Oman Investment Fund (OIF), has been named as Karwa Motors and will be launched soon, according to Qatari media reports.

Mowasalat and OIF held a ceremony in Qatar early last week concluding the third phase of the feasibility study for the vehicle assembly plant.

Both companies had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in July, 2012, to set up the unit in Oman. The scope of the MoU covers setting up a facility in Oman for the manufacture and assembly of buses and other vehicles over a nearly 1mn sq km plot of land.

A delegation from Mowasalat and its partners will visit Oman this week to make the official announcement of the project and its name, Qatari newspaper The Peninsula reported.

The English daily quoted Mowasalat chairman and managing director Jassem al Sulaiti, as saying, "I consider OIF a partner in this outstanding achievement, which is a strong evidence of both countries' commitment to improving public transport and helping implement sustainable mobility in the region and the embodiment of the wise leadership of Qatar. The proposed venture in Oman would be one of the largest of its kind in the whole of the Middle East."

Mowasalat won the 'Middle East Leading Projects Award' for the project in Oman as part of the Grow with Public Transport International Campaign 2013.
