JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has appointed Prince Salman as the new crown prince and deputy premier, following the death of Prince Naif, the Saudi Press Agency said Monday.
Salman also retains his current post as defense minister.
Deputy Interior Minister Prince Ahmed has been named minister of interior, a post held by the late prince for the last 37 years.
Prince Naif was appointed crown prince and deputy prime minister after then Crown Prince Sultan died off illness last October.
