MUSCAT -- Plans are afoot to develop a marina in Khasab, top sources told the Times of Oman yesterday.
Revealing this, Captain Bruno Meier, operations manager, IGY (Island Global Yachting), the company that is currently managing the operation of Marina Bander Al Rowdha (MBAR), also noted that the plans extended to other areas too, but did not disclose the names.
He, however, highlighted plans to double the size of MBAR and change the concept of the traditional marina into a more modern one.
The plan is to develop MBAR from a 'parking marina' to a 'lifestyle marina', he said, adding that they had several other development projects on the anvil.
"We hope to bring in more sports-related activities, especially sailing regatta, offshore sailing and other marine sports," he said.
Captain Meier said that his personal target was to turn the marina into a first-class operation, offering a "very high level of services to all berth holders".
IGY is a leading developer and manager of luxury marina facilities.
The company focuses on designing, developing, acquiring and controlling mega-yacht and other luxury-class marina facilities in key yachting and nautical tourism areas around the world. Headquartered in New York, IGY also has offices in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Greenville, South Carolina, St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, etc.
IGY is the designer, developers, and operator of all Nakheel's signature projects, including the Palm Islands, The World and the Dubai Waterfront.
Meier, who has 20 years of experience in the nautical and hospitality industry and an internationally-recognised specialist in marina management, was sent from Dubai to Muscat early this year.
He has already begun restructuring the marina, building upon the past achievements to IGY standards.
MBAR is a perfect opportunity for IGY to prove their unwavering commitment to providing only the finest facilities and services in the industry. Located at the gateway to Oman's scenic coastline, MBAR is uniquely positioned both geographically and commercially to take advantage of a growing residential and tourist population.
"I intend to raise the level of the existing services to a premier level of standards, as in all other IGY's worldwide locations," Meier commented.
To a query, he said he hoped to create a "'life style' for our berth holders, improve the procedures, help in organizing regattas and other events, in cooperation with our Dubai office; we will also advertise on the international scene for this marina and the Omani coastline and tourism".
Immediate plans include staff-training to maintenance, from additional pontoons to the creation of a dry stack area.
As for long-term projects, they were considering a revamp of the marina in order to turn MBAR into a centre for the yachting industry in Oman.
MBAR usually welcomes yachts up to 30m LOA with a maximum draft of 4.0m (subject to availability of space).
