Iran can reach self-sufficiency in the production of red meat within 10 years by implementing the national plan for breeding sheep, goat as well as calf, said deputy minister of agricultural Jihad for livestock affairs.

Sa'adatollah Abbasi explained that the country can meet domestic demand for red meat, but it should import 10 percent of the required meat, Fars News Agency reported on Monday.

He said Iran can produce sufficient mutton by conducting animal breeding, expanding semi-industrial and industrial units for breeding sheep in line of raising twin pregnancy in sheep, managing reproduction, and increasing the fertility rate.

Abbasi gave news that the national plan for breeding sheep and goat has been approved and started.

In addition, plans have been made to produce veal and improve the fattening units.

"Since animal breeding takes time and given the poor pastures and drought phenomenon, we should reduce the number of sheep which is fed via gazing lands and move toward industrial production."

Also, industrial production should be economical and in accordance with hygienic standards so that domestic products can compete with the imported ones, he concluded.
