Muscat: Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) has floated a tender to build a 400Kv/220Kv power grid station in Izki, as part of a major initiative to strengthen power network to enhance reliability across the country. The tender is close on the heels of awarding a contract for building one each power switchgear at Sur and Jahloot to Turky's Ozdil Energy Resources as part of the Sur-Jahloot 400kV-transmission system.
The Izki grid station will be connected to the 260 kilometre-long 400Kv transmission line from Sur, which is now under construction. The project is being implemented by Bahwan Engineering Company (BEC).
New power grid
Although the new power grid in Izki is not completely related to transmission lines for evacuating power from the 2,000MW independent power project coming up in Sur, it is partly linked to the power project, sources said. The Sur independent power project (IPP) will be commissioned in two phases -- early power of 433MW this year and full capacity by next year.
So far, as many as six companies, including global power giants, have bought tender documents for bidding the Izki grid project. These companies are Bahwan Engineering Company, Siemens, ABB, Galfar Engineering and Contracting, United Engineering Projects and Larsen & Toubro. The bids will be opened on July 8, 2013, according to the Tender Board website.
The Oman Electricity Transmission Company is currently building two transmission lines -- one between Sur and Jalhoot and the other one between Sur and Izki -- to evacuate power from Sur IPP to the national grid. Sur-Jahloot transmission line project was bagged by Saudi-based National Contracting Company, while Bahwan Engineering Company is building the Sur-Izki transmission line.
The Sur-Jahloot transmission line is expected to be ready by the end of the year, while Sur-Izki line may be ready by the end of 2014. The work on Sur-Izki line was started January this year. These transmission lines have to be in place once the power plant starts early generation.
Now Oman Electricity Transmission Company is entering the new arena of 400kV level (from 220kV), which is a prestigious voltage level and the highest one in the region.
The investment in transmission lines in the country will be more in the coming years, as the Sultanate lacks a power transmission grid criss-crossing the country, especially connecting southern Dhofar region with northern part.
