Muscat: Oman Cement Company (OCC), the second leading cement producer in the Sultanate, said it is in the process of increasing its cement grinding capacity by installing a new cement mill of 150 tonnes per hour capacity in near future. "The process of identifying a suitable vendor is in progress," stated Dr Abdullah Abbas Ahmed, chairman of OCC in his directors' report.

Oman Cement also said that the work on capacity upgradation of kiln-1 is in progress and all efforts are being made by the company to speed up the implementation. The company also plans to improve its pollution control equipment of line -2 to decrease dust emission levels. "The process to identify a suitable consultant in this regard is in progress."

Compensation
The company has imposed maximum admissible liquidated damages for delay in completion of project amounting to OMR3.74 million, which has been paid by the contractor after setting off amount receivable by them from the company.

The final receivable amount of OMR3.01 million, after setting off amount of OMR817,072 payable to contractor, has been received by the company. Meanwhile, Oman Cement Company has achieved a robust 34.89 per cent growth in net profit at OMR6.94 million for the first quarter of 2013, over the same period last year.

The company said its sales revenue also rose 12.07 per cent to OMR15.65 million from OMR13.96 million during the period under review. Oman Cement's cement production soared by 17.24 per cent to 637,269 tonnes for the first three months of 2013, from 543,544 tonnes for the same period last year. The company's clinker production was also higher at 561,119 tonnes as compared to 538,295 tonnes for the same period of 2012.

Oman Cement Company sold 628,553 tonnes during the first three months of 2013, against a sale of 558,495 tonnes for the same period last year.  Oman Cement said the growth in government spending for infrastructure projects drives demand for cement.

"With the company's well structured pricing policy, we hope that in spite of competition with other cement manufacturers, particularly from neighbouring countries, the company will continue to do well in retaining its market share," stated Dr Abdullah Abbas Ahmed, chairman of OCC.
