Several agreements on the economic front were reached during President Mohamed Morsi's recent visit to Sudan. The two sides agreed on setting up joint projects aimed at achieving food security for both countries through the cultivation of wheat and other grains, as well as livestock breeding.

One of the projects is a plan to cultivate sunflowers on 500,000 feddans of land, the harvest being used for sunflower oil. The move is aimed at securing basic needs, while saving much-needed hard currency.

According to Reuters, state commodity enterprises Meditrade and the Food Industries Holding Company between them bought at least 110,000 tonnes of sunflower oil for import in the first quarter of this year.

The two countries also agreed to establish a joint industrial zone in Khartoum to produce biofuels, pharmaceuticals and other products. A highway connecting the two countries will soon be inaugurated, which is also expected to boost trade.
