Rabat - Morocco counted 23.5 million mobile phone subscribers in the first half of 2009, compared to 21.4 million a year earlier, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) said on Wednesday.
These subscribers are distributed between the three operators that share the mobile market in Morocco at a rate of 14.3 million for Maroc Telecom (60.71 percent market share), 8.63 million for Medi Telecom (36.69 percent) and 612,000 for Wana (2.6 percent), according to statistics published by the ANRT.
Between March and June 2009, the number of mobile subscribers in Maroc Telecom dropped from 14.63 million to 14.3 million people, while Medi Telecom and Wana saw the number of mobile subscribers rose from 8.36 million to 8.63 million and from 521,000 to 612,000 respectively.
Regarding fixed telephony, ANRT statistics show a rising number of subscribers at end June 2009 to around 3.27 million.
The analysis of the evolution of the fixed telephony shows that this market recorded a quarterly growth of 5.64 percent at end June 2009 against 3.41 percent one quarter earlier.
In terms of market share, the operator Wana Corporate holds 60.27 percent of the market, followed by Maroc Telecom with 39.48 percent and Medi Telecom with 0.25 percent.
As to the Internet market, the park totals at end June 30 some 962,685 subscribers against 834,463 at end-March.
In terms of market share, Maroc Telecom holds 59.42 percent of the internet market, followed by Wana Corporate with 31.35 percent and Medi Telecom with 8.95 percent.
