The Dead Sea - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs Nasser Judeh stressed that Jordan's position, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, regarding the Syrian crisis has been clear and consistent since the beginning of the fighting and calls for the need to reach a political solution that ensures the security and safety of Syria, and its territorial integrity, through the participation of all Syrian people.

During a lecture he delivered on Tuesday at the Strategic Forum for the Mediterranean and Gulf, organized by the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies, Judeh reviewed Jordan's efforts , citing "Amman's ministerial meeting on Syria" which will be held tomorrow, with the participation of the foreign ministers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Turkey, Germany and Italy.

The Amman meeting will be held based upon the formula used in the Rome meeting last February and Istanbul meeting last April for coordination and consultation prior to the international meeting on Syria, which is scheduled to take place in June, to reach a political solution for the Syrian crisis.

Judeh also spoke of the burdens shouldered by Jordan in all sectors as a result of hosting increasing numbers of Syrian refugees, urging the international community to shoulder its responsibilities in helping Jordan to continue performing its humanitarian role to serve and shelter those refugees.

The minister also talked in the lecture, which is held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum to begin at the Dead Sea next Friday, about the reform process in the Kingdom led by His Majesty King Abdullah II and what has been achieved , notably the constitutional amendments, creation of the constitutional court, parliamentary elections and the formation of the first cabinet through consultations with the Lower House, and receiving a vote of parliamentary confidence on that basis.

He also spoke of the obstacles faced by the reform process, such as the recent regional events, the nation's economic situation and consumer price increases.

Judeh reiterated that the Palestinian issue is at the core of the struggle in the region, pointing out that the region and the world will not enjoy security and stability without finding a comprehensive and just solution to this issue.

The minister cited Jordan's efforts, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, to resume talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis to negotiate a two-state solution and establish an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, which is a higher national interest for Jordan, as much as it is a Palestinian interest, based upon international terms of reference and the Arab peace initiative.
