TEHRAN -- Iran will become the first producer of isocyanate in the Middle East owing to the operation of Karun Petrochemical Complex, Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) reported here on Wednesday.

Located in southern Iran, Karun Petrochemical will be pre-commissioned early 2007, the first in the Middle East to produce isocyanate, Mohsen Tasolloti, the managing director of Petrochemical Special Economic Zone Organization said.

This is the second petrochemical complex under construction by the private sector, he stated. Rejal Petrochemical was the first and came on line recently, he added.

Isocyanate is used in cooling systems as well as manufacturing foams for auto industry, the official elaborated.

As for Arvand Petrochemical Complex, Tasolloti noted that the construction of the complex has so far progressed by 65 percent, and will be Iran's greatest unit to produce polyvinyl chloride (PVC) once it is operational.
