About 29.053 gigawatts (GW) of electricity were produced in Iran since the beginning of the current Iranian year (started March 21).

This shows an increase of 3.85 percent compared with the corresponding figure of last year.

According to the report released by IRNA, 27.046 GW and 2.012 GW of the figure pertain to thermal and hydroelectric power plants respectively.

The volume of electricity produced by thermal and hydroelectric power plants during the period rose by 3.19 and 13.53 percent respectively.

Iran exported 11.054 billion kilowatt per hour of electricity to its neighboring countries in the last Iranian year, showing a 29-percent rise year-on-year.

The country also imported 3.968 million kilowatt hours of electricity last year, up 8 percent compared to the preceding year.

"Iran has constructed power plants twice as many as the average number of power plants established in the world in the past decade," said Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Behzad.

"The power generation capacity in Iran has grown by 7 percent annually in the past 10 years."
