SySDSoft deal to ensure chipmaker retains control of IP technology
Dubai: Intel Corporation, the worlds largest maker of computer chips, yesterday announced it had acquired SySDSoft, a privately-held software company based in Cairo. The terms of the deal were not released.
Intel said they had acquired most of the companys assets and hired approximately 100 of its electrical engineers and computer scientists.
SySDSoft develops software that helps mobile devices connect to wireless networks.
Sam Al Schamma, Intels general manager for the GCC, said Intel had been licensing SySDSofts technology for several years.
This is IP [internet protocol] technology we wanted to make sure we could keep and maintain, he said.
Intel said it would use the acquisition to further develop its 4G LTE network, a fourth-generation technology designed to increase the capacity and speed of mobile telephone networks. It has not yet been launched commercially.
Al Schamma said that Intel did not have any major concerns about acquiring a company in Egypt.
It was very easy for them to get past those concerns, he said.
This is a good example of how this region is just as attractive as anywhere else in the world, despite whats happening here.
