Unit 3 of the first phase of Upper Gotvand power plant will become operational next week.

Announcing this, deputy executive manager of Upper Gotvand dam and power plant projects, Mohammad Hussein Manavifard said the first phase has four units which are expected to come on stream by mid-September, IRNA reported on Wednesday.

The official said Phase 2 of Gotvand Dam power plant will be inaugurated by the end of the current Iranian year (March 2013).

He noted that once operational the power plants of the dams will supply 2,000 megawatts of electricity to the national power grid during the six hours of peak electricity consumption.

The official said the hydroelectric power plants play very important role in supplying electricity during peak consumption hours.

Manavifard added shortage of financial resources and lack of suitable infrastructures are the main reasons for a delay in the implementation of the project.

He noted that 18 years have been spent on constructing Gotvand Dam, noting if the required liquidity were made available, the project could be implemented in eight years.

In May, manager of the project to construct Gotvand Dam and its power plant said over 20 trillion rials ($2 billion) has been spent on the project.

Nasser Kamjou said the project has seen a physical progress of 98 percent, adding its first and second units will be inaugurated in coming days.

He put the entire cost of the project at 25 trillion rials ($2.5 billion).

Karoun River is the longest river with the length of 950 kilometers, he said, adding construction of 11 dams on Karoun River is on the agenda and Gotvand is one of them.

He announced that feasibility studies on Gotvand Dam begun in 1993 and completed in 1997.
