Iran's fisheries production will cross one million tons in the current Iranian year (to end March 2014), said the head of Iran's Fisheries Organization.

Gholamreza Razeqi also told ISNA that 850,000 tons of aquatics were produced in the last Iranian year (ended March 20).

He estimated that fisheries output would hit 1.3 million tons next year.

Razeqi expressed hope that non-coastal provinces would launch a key plan for production of aquatics.

"Close to one ton of sturgeons were bred in non-coastal provinces last year, 50 percent of which were exported," he said.

The official explained that Iranian sturgeons have a good market in European nations, noting that the export of sturgeons would surpass two tons this year.

In November 2012, Omid Reza Asghari, director general of Iran's Fishery Organization for shrimp and aquatics, said Iran ranked first in Asia in terms of organic shrimp production and exports.

Asghari said a number of countries, including China, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines and India, are frontrunners in the world in the field of shrimp production while Iran is the only producer of organic shrimp among them, IRNA reported.

The official said Iran has attained self-sufficiency in the field of organic shrimp production, which excludes any use of chemical substances.

"With respect to the special nutritional value of shrimps, the export of aquatic products is of high importance," he said.

Asghari also said Iran's Fishery Organization pays special attention to the production of healthy aquatic products.
