Muscat: The Royal Oman Police have identified the person who sold fake currency to Asian Express Exchange in the Khaboura region through CCTV footage.
The Indian authorities in Errnakulam town in Kerala had detained an Omani teacher, Waleed Khalid Salam Al Rushaidi and his wife, after they were found in possession of fake notes worth 40,000 Indian rupees (Dh2,734). The couple had bought that currency from the same money exchange.
According to police, an Asian national, confirmed by reliable sources to be a Pakistani, was caught selling fake currency on the CCTV cameras installed by the exchange. “The accused stayed in Oman only for about five hours during a transit and managed to sell fake currencies at the exchange,” a spokesman for the ROP said.
He added that it was obvious that the accused had come to Oman to sell fake Indian currency and left as soon as he did his dubious job.
“We are now trying to see if he can be extradited from his country of origin,” the spokesman said, adding all legal avenues would be explored to bring the culprit to court although he had left the country.
The police have urged money exchanges to strictly follow the Central Bank of Oman guidelines while buying or selling currencies. “They must take down proper identity of the person trying to sell or buy currencies,” he pointed out.
