Sohar Aluminium won Environmental Society of Oman's (ESO) annual fundraising contest Eco-Bowl 2012, held on Monday at the Al Masa bowling alley.

The event raised RO27,000. Teams of four from 14 organisations took part in the contest held to raise funds for ESO's various programmes.

The companies that participated were Asha Enterprise, Eye Candy, Port of Salalah, National Bank of Oman, Sohar Aluminium, Wolf Group of Companies, Oxy Oman, Enhance Oman, Bank of Beirut, Omanoil, Zubair Automotive Group, Services and Trade LLC, Oman LNG and Merge FM.

H H Sayyid Tarik bin Shabib al Said, ESO patron, was the guest of honour while the organisation's president, H H Sayyida Tania bint Shabib al Said, was also present. Sohar Aluminium scored the highest with 1,209 points, closely followed by NBO with 1,203 points and Port of Salalah with 1,181 points. Yousef al Balushi from team NBO was declared the player with the most strikes.

Members of the first-placed team won a Samsung Galaxy S III each, while the first runners up won Nikon cameras. Members of the Port of Salalah team were awarded packages to stay at Sahab Hotel in Jebel Akhdar and Desert Nights Camp in Sharqiya sands. The best striker was given a dinner for four at Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz Carlton Hotel.

Sayyida Tania said, "I think the response for today's event has been tremendous. We have 14 teams here. This would not have been possible without the incredible effort of the organisations who gave their time to support us in project work, events and research.

"Also, the day-to-day running of the society would not be possible without our sponsors who generously support us in our work. The amount raised will go towards ESO's administration and running cost of community outreach and to support our various projects.

"Today's event has been a lot of fun; it was an interactive and informal way to encourage corporate social responsibility among employees."

"We are always happy to know that all these organisations support ESO in its cause. The event was a healthy way for various organisations to interact and gather for a cause,"said Sayyid Tarik.

"It has been a really good event. We have enjoyed a lot.

It's the first time that we participated. It's nice to interact with people from different organisations. More than the winning, I believe it's the spirit of the game that we all enjoyed," said Rufus D'Silva, assistant advertising manager of Merge FM.
