Egypt's government is set to offer the first railway project for Public Private Partnership (PPP) in November 2013, a senior official told Zawya.
"The project cost is yet to be determined, pending the completion of the feasibility and technical studies, which are expected to be concluded by August 2013," said Ater Hanoora, director of the PPP Central Unit at the Egyptian ministry of finance.
"The contract will include the design, development, financing, operation and maintenance of a railway line linking the Cairo suburb of Ain Shams to the 10th of Ramadan Industrial City; passing through the city of Belbeis and 17 other passenger and cargo stations," added Hanoora.
The line will extend for a distance of 72 kilometers, and signing the contract will be undertaken by the ministry of transport, while the project will be supervised by the PPP Central Unit at the ministry of finance.
"The railway project set to be implemented between Ain Shams and the 10th of Ramadan Industrial City seeks to promote investments in the more remote desert areas of the 10th of Ramadan City, by facilitating transportation of passengers and cargo from the heart of Cairo to the industrial hub," said Basel Sheira, transport and utilities project manager at the ministry of finance.
Sheira added that the project carries economic benefits for both the 10th of Ramadan Industrial City as well as for the Egyptian economy in general, reiterating that the relevant feasibility studies would soon determine the overall investment costs involved.
