Water required by Hormuzgan, Kerman and Yazd provinces will be supplied through the inauguration of desalination plants, said the deputy head of National Water and Wastewater Engineering Company.

Hussein Bonakdari also told IRNA on Thursday that desalination plants can produce one million cubic meters of drinking water per day.

"They can also produce 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity," he added.

Bonakdari explained that the project would be implemented through the investment of private sector in four phases.

"The first phase will cost 4.5 trillion rials," he said, adding that it would play a great role in promoting the infrastructures required by the provinces of Hormuzgan, Kerman and Yazd.

With the supportive policies of Energy Ministry and National Water and Wastewater Engineering Company for the private sector, 40 to 50 percent of drinking water required by the urban population of Hormuzgan province and its islands will be secured by desalination plants.

Bonakdari said these plants will have the capacity of producing 160,000 cubic meters of drinking water round-the-clock.

"The project to supply water to 100 villages is underway," he said.

Noting that 250 billion rials have been spent on the water projects, the official explained that over 600 km of water supply lines, reservoirs with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters and 10 pumping stations have been established.

"With the completion of these projects, over 15,000 rural households will receive drinking water," he said.
Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and ECObank have allocated €377 million to Iran's water and wastewater projects, IRNA quoted Bonakdari as saying in March 2013.

"IDB and ECObank allocated €342 million and €35 million, respectively," he said.

Bonakdari noted that 8.75 trillion rials (about $714 million) worth of bonds were issued, a major portion of which were sold to finance the water projects.
