A two-day workshop on how Communication for Development (C4D) strategies and programmes can help promote lasting changes in values and practices in traditional and cultural spheres began on Tuesday at Safeer Plaza Hotel. The event was organised by UNICEF, in collaboration with Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Social Development.

"Changes often take time, are challenging to measure and require sustained efforts and application of resources," said Shoubo Rasheed Jalal, regional communication for development specialist at the United Nation's Children's Fund regional office for the Middle East and North Africa while talking to Muscat Daily.

"The aim of this workshop is to provide an opportunity for UNICEF programme staff and partners to strengthen capacity to apply C4D methodology within sectoral programmes," she said. She added that it includes measuring behavioural and social change outcomes that contribute to the achievement of planned results of Oman-UNICEF country programme for co-operation 2012-2015.

According to her, creation of dialogue among community members is a very important factor in solving issues for which improvement skills are needed. "Issues may vary from person to person, community to community or for that matter country to country," she said, for which the right way to approach a certain issue of the target community must be identified.
