director commends UAE ?on trade policy review

Abu Dhabi The director general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Pascal Lamy, commended the UAE’s issuance of the ‘2010 Trade Policy Review’ [2010 TPR], which was prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Trade last August. Lamy’s remarks came in a letter of appreciation addressed to Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Foreign Trade, regarding the issuance of the voluntary report that showcases the UAE’s foreign trade policy outside of the regular framework.

Saud holds talks with Turkish team

Ras Al Khaimah Shaikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, yesterday held talks with a Turkish delegation comprising top businessmen who called on him at the Al Dhait Palace here. Shaikh Saud welcomed the delegation led by Zekeriya Aslan, Member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, and expressed hope that the delegation’s visit would help strengthen ties and pave the way for increased economic cooperation.

Air Arabia gets Airbus A320

Dubai Sharjah-based Air Arabia has taken delivery of the first of 44 A320s on order during a delivery ceremony in Hamburg, Germany. Airarabia becomes the newest operator and customer of directly-purchased Airbus aircraft. Airarabia’s order for 44 A320s (34 placed in 2007 and 10 placed in 2008) will make the carrier one of the region’s largest A320 operators and equip the carrier with one of the region’s most modern fleets. ?

Mauritius for better ties with Dubai

Dubai A delegation from the Republic of Mauritius visited Dubai Airport Freezone to seek cooperation and assistance with a planned 72 hectare air cargo logistics centre. “Like Dubai, we would like to develop Mauritius into an aviation hub to increase traffic and at the same time put more emphasis on air cargo,” a delegation member said.

ABB wins $148m Kuwait order

Dubai ABB, the power and automation technology group, has won an order from the Ministry of Electricity and Water in Kuwait for the construction and rehabilitation of the Mina Abdullah water pumping plant. The civil works will be carried out by the Ahmadiah Group, the local consortium partner for the project. ABB’s project scope is worth $148 million (Dh543.16 million).

Demand in Gulf increases 5%-6%

Dubai Demand for steel is rising five to six per cent annually, according to figures released by Al Fajer Information and Services. There are 67 steel plants in the Arab region valued at Dh10.3 billion ($2.8 billion). Europe, India and Taiwan will occupy 70 per cent of total space at Tekno/Tube Arabia 2011, the 10th International Trade Fair for industrial machinery, metal working, machine tools, tubes and pipes industry that will held from January 8 to 11 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

RWI on track to deliver products

Dubai Rubber World Industries (RWI) said it is on target to deliver Dh40 million worth of its products to customers across the Gulf by the end of 2010. The manufacturer also revealed that its operations are now back on track after the massive fire that broke out in its warehouse located in Ajman, by utilising stocks from its other storage facilities and partner factories.

Dubai The International Swiss Debt Management (ISDM) Consultancy, a Dubai-based credit counseling and debt management company, yesterday announced the launch of a unique pre-emptive programme for organisations across the UAE titled the ‘B.E.A.M Debt Programme’. The programme in its pre-launch stage has already witnessed keen interest from key UAE entities.

Dubai seeks to promote FDI

Dubai The Foreign Investment Office (FIO), an agency of the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED), has been selected to the Steering Committee of the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies (Waipa) in view of the leadership role of FIO in promoting foreign direct investment in Dubai. The Foreign Investment Office, on behalf of the UAE, will represent Middle East and North Africa as the director in the Waipa Steering Committee up to August 2012.

HB Rentals wins major Mideast deal

Dubai Dubai Global offshore accommodation specialist HB Rentals is celebrating its launch in the Middle East with the award of two multi-million dollar contracts. The US-based company has opened its new facility in Dubai and has shipped more than Dh8 million of equipment to the UAE to meet the demands of the country and the region. HB Rentals’ first contract in the Middle East has seen the company supply 13 offshore accommodation units to Jan De Nul in Saudi Arabia.
