Borouge and Marie Tecnimont Group have signed the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for its fifth polypropylene (PP5) plant in Ruwais, which is planned to increase Borouge’s polypropylene annual capacity by 25% to 2.24 million tonnes.

The new plant is projected to be integrated with the existing Borouge 3 plant in Ruwais and will be operational in the third quarter of 2021, according to a company statement.

“Building the PP5 plant in Ruwais significantly contributes to achieving Borouge’s ambition of growing the polymers production capacity by 11% to reach 5 million tonnes per year which is effectively linked to the growth ambitions of both ADNOC and Borealis to grow polymers production capacity.”

The EPC’s value was not revealed.

The PP5 plant will be the tenth Borstar plant in Ruwais that contributes to the global supply of creative polypropylene products under the partnership between ADNOC and Borealis.

Borouge is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and Austria’s Borealis.
