The airport terminal, which will be completed within 38 months, will be designed to handle 12 million passengers annually. However, a senior Bechtel official based in Dubai declined to comment on winning the contract by saying, "I don't want to comment anything at this moment."

A senior official of the Ministry of Transport and Communications recently said that the Muscat International Airport expansion will be ready for opening by March 2014.

The airport is designed in such a way to scale up the terminal passenger handling capacity to 24 million at a later stage.

The main facilities at Muscat airport will be completed by end-2013, but there will be a trial and readiness testing period. Therefore, the passenger terminal building, northern runway and air traffic control (ATC) tower and air traffic management (ATM) system will be opened by March 2014.

The main features of the expansion scheme include a new dual independent runways operations system, a new fuel farm and fuel network and new air traffic control tower.

The Muscat International Airport, which is designed to accommodate large Airbus 380 plane, will have 29 aircraft contact stands and 10 to 30 remote parking stands, depending on phasing options.
Once operational, the airport will also have 60 departure check-in counters for economy class and another 24 counters for passengers of other class, which is in addition to several kiosks for easy check-in. The departure section also will have 29 boarding gates for different destinations, and another 15 boarding gates for remote aircraft stands.
