MUSCAT -- ACWA Power Barka, which owns and operates an Independent Water and Power Project at Barka (also known as the Barka 1 IWPP), has received the green light for its plans to add 10 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) of additional desalination capacity at its facility. The approval came as part of a set of resolutions adopted at the Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) of the company held at the Grand Hyatt Muscat on Sunday.

The OGM also approved a decision by the company to secure a loan to finance the expansion. Shareholders also gave their assent to a proposal by the company to enter to a supplemental Operation & Management (O&M) agreement with a related party to operate and maintain the expansion project.

The expansion will effectively boost the water desalination capacity of Barka 1 by around 50 per cent from the present 91,000 m3/day (20 MIGD) to around 135,000 m3/day (30 MIGD). It will also go some way in addressing a projected shortfall in water desalination capacity within the 'Interconnected Zone' over the next seven years (2012-2018).
