Abu Dhabi International Airport says passenger traffic grew by 21 per cent in the first quarter of 2012 compared with the same period a year ago, as the Gulf emirate pushes ahead with its expansion in tourism and industry.

The airport saw 3.4 million passengers pass through in the first three months of this year, a statement from the operating company said.
"The double digit growth in number of passengers reflects the level of attraction the emirate holds as a business and tourism destination," said Harib al Hameli, vice president of operations at Abu Dhabi Airports Company, in the statement.
The Far East ranked as the top region for the airport, generating 39 per cent of traffic, followed by the Middle East with 25 per cent and Europe with 22 per cent, the statement said.
The UAE capital is investing billions of dollars in industry, tourism and infrastructure as it diversifies its economy away from oil.
